Katrina Stanley, a lifelong Detroit resident and Licensed Practical Nurse, is the Founder & CEO of Mothers in Mourning (M.I.M.), a Detroit-based nonprofit created to support mothers and families affected by unexpected child loss.
After experiencing the unexpected loss of three sons at different stages of her life, Katrina recognized firsthand that the effects of child loss can extend far beyond the loss itself. Grief can create a ripple effect—impacting emotional and physical well-being, relationships, employment, finances, family life, and a mother’s ability to find direction after life has suddenly changed.
Her vision for M.I.M. grew through conversations with other mothers throughout Detroit who had also lost children unexpectedly. Again and again, she encountered mothers trying to navigate grief while continuing to manage families, responsibilities, goals, and everyday life—often unsure of where to turn for continued support, resources, and connection.
Mothers in Mourning was created in response to that need.
Through awareness, education, resources, remembrance, connection, and community-based support, M.I.M. is being built to address the broader ripple effects of unexpected child loss. While mothers are at the heart of the mission, the vision extends to the family as well, including the planned Dads Hurt Too initiative to recognize and support grieving fathers.
For Katrina, this work is both personal and purposeful: taking what was learned through lived experience, listening to the experiences of other mothers, and using those voices to help build something meaningful for Detroit families.
Purpose is building the movement.
